Buy or Sell: Underground Hip Hop is overrated?

I don't know how many times I've heard people say that all mainstream hip hop sucks. And that the only thing worth listening to is underground. ALL mainstream doesn't suck, just most of the stuff on the radio. But there is more mainstream than that around. It just doesn't get a lot radio play.

Another thing, I don't think that some people even know what underground is. Lupe Fiasco is no longer underground. Neither is Common, Nas, KRS-One, Lil' Wayne, or Cassidy. Correct me if I'm wrong but an underground artist is one that has NOT been signed by a record label.

What are your thoughts on underground hip hop?

how is it 'overrated', 80% of people havent heard it yet. its not in the media either. so no one even rated it yet. just opinions on the internet.

i think its overrated by underground fans, who think underground artists are god's greatest gift to hip hop
Most are "underground" for a reason. They shop the same trash as those established, and there is only so much room for the same teenie thug bop hip pop on the radio stations (95% of their playlist). . .
the definition of mainstream is the stuff on the radio.....

an underground rapper can be defined how ever you want it to be defined.....
Most underground hip-hop has a message and is very clear. You're right most mainstream does not suck such as Nas, Jadakiss, Eminem, Young Jeezy, Chamillionare, ect. To underground fans, yes, it is overrated but not well known as it should be.
by purely underground fans, hell yes. it gets so annoying hearing about all these rappers i never heard of talking about random *** **** over strange beats. i listen to underground a lot but if i only listened to it i would strangle myself
Underground hip hop is great! Mainstream hip hop everyone talks about the same thing everyone else is talking about. Also when someone gets hot in mainstream hip hop, next thing you know.. he's on everyones album or song "Lil Wayne, Akon, T.I. etc..". It gets old! Underground hip hop there is variety, you got the old gangsta sound, dirty south, west coast etc..
The thing is how do you define mainstream? for me its the music played on the radio (or getting massive public exposure). Therefore perhaps the stuff you listen to thats not on the radio is underground? Underground hip hop is not overated, its underrated...thats why its underground. And your right.....most people dont really know what an underground artist is. People here always drop lupe's name or lil brother without really knowing. For me underground artists are Soul Position, Panacea, LMNO, Blu %26amp; Exile, Camp Lo and other such artists. But it seems if you drop an artists name down on Y!A like this, you catch a major case of thumbs down.
it is underground for a reason
people who say underground hip hop is overrated dont know what there talking about. the underground is where the real hip hop lives amazing beats and intelligent lyrics why wouldnt you want to listen to that over the same garbage repeated over and over and over again for those who dont dig the underground i hope you drown in the mainstream...
