For simplicity purposes, I am grouping ALL HIP HOP together to include underground and mainstream.
Everyone keeps saying that Hip Hop is not dead but I can鈥檛 think of anyone that is really blowin up!
The 80鈥檚 had Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane etc..
The 90鈥檚 had Pac, Big, Rakim, Nas, Jay Z
What does the millennium have? Here we are going on 2008, the decades almost over and I can鈥檛 really name one BIG name!
And I know people are going to give me the same tired list of Common, Talib, Lupe etc.. I like them, but I don鈥檛 LOVE them. And underground needs to step up their game.
*NAS BY HIMSELF* overrides all the current acts. Hands down.
Let鈥檚 face it, the 2000鈥檚 really didn鈥檛 BLOW UP as in previous decades.
Agree or not?
What is today鈥檚 Hip Hop missing?myspace.com widgets
I agree with you. I think a lot of what hip hop is missing today is great production. Back in the day the beats were off the chain, it seems now days the beats sound like they cater to elementary kids.

Agree
I agree today's hip hop is definitely missing something. Not sure if it's the hip or the hop. Maybe it's just getting played out and we need something new?
hip hop is missing people who can drop solid albums, and arent just one-hit wonders. every artist on the radio today will be a distant memory by next month. i can't think of a rapper who debuted in the last 3 years who dropped a classic album, can you?
This decade has:Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, (A Better than before) Lil Wayne and when you think about it, Jay Z overall was better this decade than in the 90's. Andre 3000 has evolved into
a unbelievable lyricist. Plus the best battle of all time was this decade, which was Jay Z and Nas.
We need to stop comparing decades and enjoy the music.
MICHEAL: Wat the heck are you talking bout?!!!! No hip hop cd as gone platinum in the first week since The Massacre. Also, Kanye outsold 50 Cent. Stop spreading wrong facts!!!!
Well there's always some exceptions, but I have to agree with you, I didn't really feel anything "blow up" in this decade. A lot of it (not all) is disposable.
I'd say it's missing the most important thing...
MUSIC!!!
Hip-hop is trash for the ignorant... only serves to perpetuate the stereotype... if you know what I mean
Different age different type of music...RUN DMC sound nothin like Pac and dem. Pac and dem don't sound nothin like the music now but T.I. is ill, Lil' Wayne is jus stupid wit it and kanye west been doin his thang for a minute too. Hip hop gotta evolve and change or it gets boring and wont touch as many people as it could it has a much bigger fan base now becuz rappers are more fluid these days and the 90s are over nobody wants to hear about death and struggle all the time.
And T Junior wat do you mean u lil bit(h cuz i dont get it u lil peckerwood mufukca
B-A-L-A-N-C-E is what today's hip hop is missing
Individuality
Everyone is changing the game, but it still remains the same.
I agree with you 200%
soul, lryics yea hip hop isnt dead but in a sense it is, cause of all the fakke rappers like souljia boy and his gay dance
Missy Elliot
Timbaland
Outkast
i agree but cmon man...Common and Talib? theyre both in my top 25 of all time (Common is 10 on my list and Kweli is 25). theyre really good...about the best lyricists in the game rite now (next to ppl like Jay and Nas)
but besides those 2...yea nobody..
Lyrical content. period. Everything is beats and yelling.
Hip Hop has seen a big name during the 2000s...
50 Cent has been the biggest rapper of the new millenium along with Eminem and Jay-Z continuing his run.
50 has sold 30 million records off of 3 solo albums. He's a worldwide star, as is Eminem.
Nas has not put a dent in the mainstream or Hip Hop period since 2001 with Stillmatic, but I love Nas as an artist.
The group I love the most is Little Brother. They have great songs and great albums(all 3 albums are classics), but they have yet to gain sales.
Hip Hop is not dead musically, but sales wise, things are different. People are downloading albums nowadays... If they weren't, here's what the sales would have been for 50 and Kanye.
50- 1.6 million the first week, 3.5 million total as of now.
Kanye- 1.3 million the first week... 3.2 million total as of now.
Lloyd Banks-Rotten Apple would have went gold, Young Buck would be at 800k right now
Soulja Boy would be gold now, Common would be at 800k on his way to platinum, Hurricane Chris would have sold 150k his first week.
Nas' Hip Hop is Dead would have went 2x Platinum, Jay's Kingdom Come would have done 3.5 to 4 million.
Hip Hop isnt dead, downloading just ruined it pretty much
