Why do people think hip hop is degrading?

if hip hop is so degrading to women, then why do a good portion of the female population listen to hip hop

because women like the beat and dont care!

It is not music
because the ones that do knows they dont act liek the women portrayed in the music the ones who DO act like that behind closed doors are the ones who care so much about it

i.e the chicks at spellman who were on oprah i kid u not i saw them broads in a club about a month ago shaking they asses
degrading lyrics are degrading lyrics, regardless of the type of music that accompanies them. One could surely put degrading lyrics to Mozart, etc. if they were so depraved.

However, the trend has been that the singles making it to the charts and playlists on the radio, and the videos making it on television, focus more on treating women as objects rather than as individuals, as well as focusing on violence, selfishness, and irresponsibility.

As to why a good portion of the female population listens -there are a LOT of people with problems out there...
Your question assumes that all hip hop degrades women, and I can't speak for all female hip hop listeners, but for me as a HH head, the majority of hip hop that I listen to does not degrade women. When I do listen to hip hap that degrades women I could care less, I am not the type of woman that they are referring to, I am actually the opposite of them.
Because they are stupid. There's no other way to put it. They look past the obvious objectification of women and like what they see. "Bling", cash, cars, sex, parties, drugs, expensive alcohol, mansions... "If you listen to my music, this is what you can expect." It's all a buncha crap.
I don't think hip hop is degrading i love it. people have their opinions and you have to look at like this mind over matter you don't mind and they don't matter. so don't worry about who likes or dislikes your music you are your own person listen to and be what you want forget what others think they probably don't like it cause they are old or can't dance to it or just don't like it. But if it is what you like listen to it forget them they are no you and you will be who u are Don't let anyone try to control your style it can be tragic for you if you do. Be u and be proud of who you are and what you like.
well women are like that. as long as the beat is pop and theyre tricked into thinking its hip hop, and the artist is "cute" theyll like it no matter what. but some are smart and conscious and i got alot of respect for them.
Because 90% of women are ignorant and really can't decipher what the song is saying. All women should just go back to the kitchen.
i personally don't think it's degrading.. but it's maybe because of the foul language used.. we listen to it because we like the beat.. :)
Normally when a Hip Hop song comes out, that last thing anyone listens to is the lyrics because the beat obviously makes one nods his or her head to the beat. We usually don't pay attention to the lyrics until some time has passed. Hip Hop today isn't the same as Hip Hop from the early to mid 80's. People actually rapped about having fun, but these days, everybody wants to rap about all the materialistic stuff they own. This is probably why a "good portion of the female population" listen to this stuff is because they are attracted to that stuff. You also can't listen to Hip Hop today without hearing, "F this" or "F that" or "Bit** this" or "Bit** that" or "Bustin a cap" on this and that. Then when these artists win a Grammy, they're quick to Thank God. What a big contradiction. One of the few artists today that are really positive are: Will Smith and others like him.
they only use those girls in the video to sell it. sex sells. never forget that. its the way it is even though its not right. and besides those girls in the vid are getting paid right? its their job and theyve chosen to be dancers. in answer to your question women know all of the above.
i think its more the videos that are disgrading than the music itself
The terms like *****, ho and general "slap her down" attitude doesn't promote a good self image for girls or women. Not to say all hip-hop contains these messages, some of it does have truths about society and can be entertaining. Peer pressure drives young women to listen and even promote it. Never underestimate the power of peer pressure.
They think hip hop is degrading because they call women degrading names and mainly talk about getting rich and sex like it's the most important thing in the world.

It brings down the black community because things in the media seem to stereotype certain groups.

And just because a good portion of the female population listen to it doesn't mean it's not degrading. They chose to ignore it and sometimes agree with it.
i dnt no bout other girls but when i listen 2 it i dnt care cuz i dnt look at it like there talkin bout me or all the girls jus the ones that shakin dey a$$ for dem
Most think its not talking about them, but yet when you go to the club a guy can just walk up from behind and get a dance. Now your sayin this happens with most music, but hip hop started it and most women just fall in line after a while. Its kinda womens fault to cause they keep doing it for the men in the videos. Karrine Stephens may have felt bad for what she did, but she really just inspired other women to degrade themselves. If you have to show your body for money then you must not have a lot of skills or brains
