Work on your craft first and foremost... if it's all about the music/lyrics, make sure the production and beats are top-notch - don't settle for mediocre beats. Make sure your flow is tight and on rhythm. You have to think about how you want to portray yourself, when you pick the themes of your music. Do you want to portray yourself as a gang-banger, a club-goer, a pimp, a political rebel, a regular joe?
It's great you're going to L.A. Going to a music capital like L.A. or New York (or even Atlanta if you're at the dirty south) is important.
Other things I would do for success:
1. Create buzz and build your fan base. Can't stress this enough. On myspace or at shows have an email sign up sheet when playing shows. Having a large fan base will impress A%26amp;R people from the record companies.
2. Keep it real. If you're from the inner city or if you're from the suburbs or if you're white or if you're female, I'd play off that and give an original point of view... don't try to be all gangsta if you're white and not gangsta (i.e. Vanilla Ice).
3. Get on those live emcee battles in your own area to practice.
4. Make sure those beats are not generic and copycat.
5. Practice more and network more!!
Good luck!!
