elvis made songs like "blue suede shoes", nowadays marilyn manson makes songs like "if i was your vampire" but nobody says rock is dead. Johnny Cash mades songs like "Folsom Prison Blues" and today Trace Adkins sings about "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" but nobody says Country is dead. In the sixties the tempations made songs like "My Girl" and now you hear songs like Pretty Willie's "Lay ya body down" but nobody says that R%26amp;B is dead... my point is, all genres have changed their subject matter-so how can hip hop be the only genre dead?!?! those sayin hip hop is dead are bein close minded and quite honestly, i'm gettin fed up with it. they say everybody is rappin about the same thing now, but when rappers DO rap about something different (take Kanye for example) they're being a sellout... what do ya'll need to be satisfied???
Why are people saying hip hop is dead??? IT!!! IS!!! NOT!!! DEAD!!! (everybody with a pulse should read this)?myspace quiz
It's definitely not dead. People are looking at the mainstream acts. However, this art form is alive and it's best underground oftentimes. The rappers or artists that we see are the ones that people identify with the art form. However, look at other artists like The Roots, Little Brother, Dilated Peoples, Jurassic Five, Common, Talib Kweli, Brother Ali, and a lot of others. These artists don't get the attention of some of the mainstream acts, but they're just as viable. There's still a lot of love for hip-hop and it's still a lot of diversity. People are focusing on the mysogyny, violence, and materialism. However, society itself suffers from these ills, so why are we surprised when it filters in to music. Other art forms have these same vices. I agree the person who asked this question. Everybody who's given up on hip-hop needs to stop trippin. IF ALL OF YOU WOULD SEEK OUT THE REAL HIP-HOP AND SUPPORT IT, THE ART FORM WOULD PROGRESS. THERE'S REAL RECORDS BEING PUT, BUT WHERE ARE ALL YOU COMPLAINERS? Do any of you have any of the artists I mentioned earlier in your collection. Probably not, and if you don't, SHUT UP AND EITHER SUPPORT REAL HIP-HOP OR GET THE F*** OUT OF THE WAY

Hip Hop %26amp; Rap aren't dead? Are you sure? I think they are. In fact I know they are.
i guess they mean that like the older people who did hip hop were the best but since they're not out anymore than it's not the same
I agree that in some facets hiphop is not dead, however the hiphop which was positive and fun and light and casual is dead. Even the newer 'club' and just plain "bs" hiphop has serious undertones, is disrespectful to women, has violent undertones.
I think alot of people are saying that the hiphop that they love is dead. the De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, jungle brothers, groups like that, which were all about fun and positivity, are dead.
I also find it humorous that the song "Hip hop is dead" is produced by one of the main reasons why hip hop sucks right now will.i.am. If there ever was a sellout in the music industry, its gotta be that guy.
i agree with you 100%
It's just wishful thinking - they WISH it was dead.
.
No it's not dead, but gangsta rap is killing it. Best hip hop is comin' from DefJux. Check out Aesop Rock's song "We're Famous" for a reply to people saying hip hop's dead.
For what it's worth, every few years it seems like every genre is dead. I have heard people say that rock is dead, punk is dead, etc.
Like another person said, when someone says genre X is dead, they usually mean a particular era of it is dead. Like positive hip hop.
CAUSE THEY ARE ALL POSERS NOW.
Real hip hop is dying.... Any fool can make a recording now and become the next big thing and they aint talking about sht........
its just that the quality of the music has plateaued and no one has taken it to the next level in the past decade or so.
Drew W knows whats up!
Hip Hip is dead man. If G-Unit, D4L, Lil' Wayne, Shop Boyz, and Three Six Mafia are the faces of hip hop, then hip hop has died. What happened to the Red Head KingPin's? the Nas'? the MC Shan's? MC-ing used to be a big deal. Now it's all about diamonds and million dollar necklaces and ****. HIP HOP IS DEAD! Hip Hop has been stuck in this same selfish brag rap for about 10 years now...hip hop is only 30 years old. that 1/3 of the time talking about selfish b.s. thats pretty sad.
Everyone is singing about the same ****. There is no originality anymore.
I feel ya on that.
Think about this: The form of hip-hop that has saturated the mainstream, is dead.
Good music and good culture will always endure (notice I said "good music", not everything that we refer to as "hip hop"). Even the book of psalms in the bible has endured 1000s of years.....because it is good music with meaningful lyrics. "Good" hip hop music will endure....rest assured.....
you have to forgive them. in fact this whole hip hop is dead thing started from a washed up artist who needs to sell more albums before he goes broke.
IT IS NOT DEAD.......as long as we are still listening, it is still very much alive.....
I agree that the real hip hop today is underground stuff like Atmosphere and its alive and well. But as far as mainstream bullshit goes, it was confirmed dead to me when I heard rich boy's throw some d's last year. I threw the last shovelful of dirt on its grave when I heard the party like a rock star song a couple weeks ago. Crunk is retarded, Snap is even worse. Good mainstream MC's like Ghostface dont really get pushed even by Def Jam but I suppose they know he has a niche fanbase. But whats sad is there are young kids who only listen to the mainstream stuff and its just not good for them or anyone's mind if they want to grow. I do enjoy some of the new British rappers such as Just Jack and the Streets cuz they are actually original and experimental.
well thats what nas is saying and its true
SoSo, Roughruggedraw, rnrstar82, Drew, Jeremy J know what they are talking about, but Jeremy J.. cant say I agree with you on the dufjux, but at least you know what hip hop is. props to you 5.
p.s. mainstream rap killed hip hop
