A lot of hip-hop is very degrading today and has no meaning. Even I say that as a hip-hop lover. It's like that not to degrade woman in my opinion, but have something to dance to. Just remember though there is a difference between rap and hip-hop. Hip-hop is Bow Wow and Ludacris. Rap is Tupac Shakur. There's a big difference!

yeah, it is pretty sad, but not all of them are like that. eminem for one first capitalized on people's desire to hear that sh*t and then morphed the subjects into something that actually has value. example: "drips" is a completely nasty song that sounds like all the other "get sex" songs but injects a message about what happens when you f around or have unprotected sex. if you want serious rap i heard rise against is incredibly significant for our time and does NOT talk about hoochies and bling and chit. if people would look outside of MTV they could find plenty of meaningful, literary-quality music in the rap/hip-hop world. it ain't all snoop dog, yo
In their minds it's all in the sake of 'keeping it real' and 'street cred'. I do not mind hip hop but I believe that when the performers perform 'gangsta rap' that it hurts our youth and as you said the kids are emulating their 'heroes'. I believe that the kids think that it's cool to 'dis' society and women and they are creating a generation of criminals. I know that I will probably get into trouble for saying this and my intention is not to discriminate but I am afraid that things will get worse if the youth do not wake up and see that they are hurting themselves and others.
